About the Competition
The I Am A Voter Scholarship Competition tasks individuals with producing an impactful social media post in the form of a graphic design, 2D art piece, 15 second video, or animation that informs, inspires, and activates Wisconsin voters to vote in the 2022 Midterm Elections. Each entrant will share their work on social media to help Get Out The Vote and engage their networks in the political process.
Who can apply?
The I Am A Voter Scholarship Competition is only open to those who are a resident of or student in the great state of Wisconsin. We highly encourage high school students, college students, and recent graduates to apply, but the competition is open to all regardless of age. No prior educational or professional experience is needed to enter.
Your entry must address the question of why you are a voter. If you are not of voting age, you can still address why voting is important to you and your community, and encourage others to vote this year. Consider the questions:
Why is voting important?
What can you teach people about voting?
What would motivate people to get to the polls?
Designs should be shared on social media using #IAmAVoterWI and #IAmAVoterScholarship. Please tag [at]iamavoterwi on social media and encourage your networks to vote on or before November 8th. We’re on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok, and more information about the upcoming election can be found and shared here.
Only one submission is allowed per person. Acceptable submission types include graphic design, 2D visual art (like paintings, drawings, photography, et cetera), video, and animation. Video and animations must be no longer than 15 seconds.
All submissions must be a square format. We will accept photos of 2D visual art so long as they are in a square format. Video & animation must either be in a square format or a vertical format for mobile viewing.
The I Am A Voter WI logo must appear in the design. Please download the logo here.
Creating Nonpartisan Work
In order to submit to this competition, your messaging must be nonpartisan. See below for tips for effective nonpartisan design or click here to view examples in our curriculum.
By staying neutral you can be a trusted messenger and your real message—the importance of voting—will come through loud and clear without ulterior motives.
As artists creating general use content, we recommend designing around shared values like an inclusive democracy, healthy communities, or a brighter future. You can address issues (for example, civil/human rights, environmental justice, good jobs), but your piece has to be focused on voting and cannot endorse any candidate or political party.
People of younger age, people of lower income, and BIPOC populations do not turn out to vote at the same rate as other populations, often due to institutional and structural barriers. You can focus your message on reaching specific communities.
If you aren’t registered you can’t vote! Many eligible voters forget or miss the registration deadline. Be the reminder they need so their voice can count.
